Cross Country
We aim to inspire local youth through a fun, supportive, and inclusive team environment—sparking a lifelong love of cross-country skiing, the outdoors, and an active lifestyle. Guided by the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Development System, PCSS programs help athletes grow their skills, confidence, and passion for the sport.
What is Cross Country?
Cross-country skiing has two main techniques: classic and skate. In the classic technique, a waxed or textured section under the foot provides traction, allowing the skier to glide the other ski forward. Skate skiing uses a motion similar to ice skating or rollerblading on firm snow, with skis pushing off alternately. Both techniques use poles with baskets to engage the upper body in propulsion. Athletes train for endurance, strength, speed, skill, and flexibility at varying intensities, with off-season workouts including rollerskiing, running, biking, strength training, hiking, and games.
What is Nordic Combined?
Nordic combined is an exciting winter sport that blends cross-country skiing and ski jumping. In competition, athletes first complete a ski jumping event, which sets the start order for a pursuit-style cross-country race. Many of our jumpers also train with PCSS Cross Country programs, gaining well-rounded skiing abilities and versatility.

Our Purpose
At PCSS, our goal is to build a positive, rewarding, and inclusive team environment where local youth can discover and grow their passion for cross-country skiing, the outdoors, and an active lifestyle. We believe in fostering not only athletic skills but also teamwork, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for winter sports. Our programs follow the proven U.S. Ski & Snowboard Development System, providing a clear pathway for athletes of all ages and abilities to progress—from learning the basics to reaching their full potential in competition. Along the way, we focus on creating memorable experiences, building friendships, and nurturing a community that supports each skier’s unique journey.
Programs & Timeline
Learn to Train
Athletes ages 10–13 grow their cross-country skiing skills and confidence through progressive training, friendly competition, and strong team camaraderie, with opportunities to try ski jumping and explore Nordic combined. Building on solid fundamentals, they refine technique, take on new challenges, and enjoy the friendships and adventures that prepare them for the next level.
Train to Compete
Athletes ages 12–21 refine advanced cross-country skiing and, for Nordic combined athletes, ski jumping skills through structured, high-intensity training. They develop strength, endurance, and race strategies while gaining experience at regional, national, and international events. Training blends on-snow sessions, dryland conditioning, and targeted strength work, with an emphasis on performance, resilience, and the ability to thrive in a competitive team environment.
Active for Life
For athletes 20+, masters programming keeps athletes engaged in their sport beyond their competitive peak, providing opportunities to train, race, and enjoy skiing for a lifetime. Masters athletes focus on skill development, fitness, and community, whether they’re new to racing or seasoned veterans.
