Ski Mountaineering
The PCSS Ski Mountaineering Team helps athletes build the skills, fitness, and passion for ski touring and ski mountaineering. Our goal is to inspire a lifelong love of the outdoors and the sport.
What is Ski Mountaineering
Ski Mountaineering—or SkiMo—combines the endurance of a cross-country skier with the skill and strength of an alpine skier. It’s a great fit for alpine, cross-country, and all-mountain skiers, as well as mountain bikers and runners.
Athletes first master the fundamentals and efficiency of ski touring, then train with a focus on racing. SkiMo includes a range of race formats:
- Vertical – Uphill-only (15 minutes to 1 hour)
- Individual – Multiple ascents and descents (1 hour to several hours)
- Sprint – All skills in under 4 minutes, with heats and finals like cross-country ski sprints
- Mixed Relay – One male and one female athlete, each completing two legs of 7–10 minutes
SkiMo will make its Olympic debut at the 2026 Winter Games, featuring the Sprint and Mixed Relay events.

Our Purpose
The PCSS Ski Mountaineering Team is dedicated to helping athletes develop both the skills and passion for ski touring and ski mountaineering. Through supportive coaching and a fun, team-oriented environment, we strive to inspire a lifelong love for the outdoors and the sport. Athletes will build confidence, fitness, and technical ability, gaining the knowledge and experience to enjoy ski mountaineering for years to come.
Programs & Timeline
Youth Development
For young athletes ages 6–9, the foundation for ski mountaineering begins with strong all-around skiing skills. Programs like GROM Adventure and Shredders and Kickers & Gliders build balance, confidence, and versatility on snow—skills that can later be applied to ski mountaineering and any other skiing discipline.
Learn to Train
For athletes ages 10-13, Devo Skimo builds efficient uphill and downhill skills through fun, varied training, dryland in November, and on-snow sessions starting in December. Athletes gain strength, endurance, and confidence, with chances to race locally and regionally. Pair with Devo Nordic for endurance and technique, or Freestyle All Skills for all-mountain versatility—the perfect foundation for future ski mountaineering success.
Train to Compete
Athletes ages 12–21 focus on refining efficient uphill and downhill technique, building race-specific strength, and developing mental readiness for competition at the regional, national, and international level. Training includes team travel to races and monthly mountain tours that add both adventure and real-world skills. Prior Skimo experience is required.
Active for Life
For athletes 20+, masters programming keeps athletes engaged in their sport beyond their competitive peak, providing opportunities to train, race, and enjoy skiing for a lifetime. Masters athletes focus on skill development, fitness, and community, whether they’re new to racing or seasoned veterans.
