All PCSS programs – from PC Shredders where young athletes experience a 12-week program across multiple disciplines, to FIS-aged athletes competing across the globe – require significant resources to support training, coaching, education, travel, and equipment. Financial contributions to PCSS directly support the development of future athletes in our community and their pathways to success. Your donation of any size, one-time or monthly is truly appreciated.

Message from Executive Director, Christie Hind

It's so exciting to watch the leaves turning knowing that the winter season will arrive soon! Winter registration is now open, and "early bird" pricing for some of our programs ends soon, so please explore the options on our website and enroll today!

Please note that the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation (UOLF) is now accepting applications for need-based scholarships to help pay for program fees. Click here for more information and to apply.

We have many exciting events coming up soon as described in more detail below, and including parent education on brain health and concussions. Dr. Jeffrey Kutcher will facilitate this education event this coming Monday, September 18 at 6:00pm in the Legacy Lodge at the UOP. Parents (and interested athletes) are encouraged to attend.

Our annual Fall Trail Series kicks off on Thursday, Sept 21 and registration is still available. Please read below and/or click here for more information and to register for one or more of these fun community races, including the Ski Jump Challenge which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct 14.

We are also asking for your help for our partner nonprofit, the Youth Sports Alliance. YSA is a finalist for the Land Rover Defender Series Awards in the Outdoor Accessibility and Education category. The winner is named based on public vote, and YSA could potentially be awarded a Land Rover Defender 130 and $25,000 which would be used to support YSA's after school programs - Get Out & Play and ACTiV8. Please help by:

I hope you are enjoying outdoor time with your family in the beautiful, crisp Fall weather as we all look forward to (hopefully) another excellent winter season!

Brain Health Education Opportunity

Please join us in the Legacy Lodge at the UOP on Monday, September 18 from 6:00-7:30pm for a special parent education session (athletes are also welcome) on athlete brain health, including information about maintaining brain health, and potential disorders including concussions and persisting conditions after a concussion.

This session will be facilitated by Dr. Jeffrey Kutcher, who is a Team Physician for U.S. Ski & Snowboard and an internationally recognized expert and sports neurology pioneer. He was the Team Neurologist for the U.S. Olympic Team at the 2014 (Sochi), 2018 (Pyeongchang) and 2022 (Beijing) Winter Games.

Park City Fall Trail Series

Full distance races range from 4 miles to 6 miles, with a youth event for 12 and younger around 1 mile. Points are awarded at each event toward Series awards. Food and swag at each event.

The first event will be held September 21 with additional races on September 28, October 5, and the final Ski Jump Challenge on Saturday, October 14. Click here to learn more and sign up for one or more events!

We also needs volunteers to help with these events. To get a jump start on completing your work deposit hours for the 2023-24 season, click here to see available opportunities and sign up today!

JANS Winter Welcome

On Saturday, October 28, the Youth Sports Alliance (YSA) will host JANS Winter Welcome. This annual fundraising event supports youth winter sports programs in the greater-
Park City area, including Park City Ski & Snowboard. This year's grand prize opportunity drawing winner is headed to Paris, France for a week-long trip to the 2024 Summer Olympic Games!

You can support PCSS by purchasing opportunity drawing tickets from a current PCSS athlete. You can also buy tickets online here, but be sure to indicate the PCSS division you wish to support with your purchase!

Park City Ski Swap

The Annual Park City Ski Swap and Sale is slated for November 3 - 5 at the Basin Recreation Fieldhouse! This is the largest single fundraiser for PCSS and we will need volunteers, so watch for an announcement soon regarding available positions. Hours worked will count toward your work deposit for the year, so it's a good way to get some of those hours completed early in the season!

Please encourage your friends, family, and acquaintances to attend! The Park City Ski Swap is a fantastic opportunity for people who want great deals on a terrific selection of new and used skis, snowboards, boots, poles, apparel and accessories.

Division Updates

Aerials

As Fall arrives and water and air temps are getting brisk, the Aerials team plans to wrap up water ramping on October 14. Athletes have been using the ramps all summer long to fine tune their jumps before taking those skills to snow.

Planning is well underway for our winter training and competition schedule. Specifically, winter training begins on  November 2 in the Center of Excellence (COE) with trampoline and workouts. We leave for the World Cup in Ruka, Finland on November 18.

Head FIS Women's Coach, Jay Hey, prepping the FIS Women on the next task

Alpine

Our first two weeks of dryland are in the books, and the athletes have been crushing it! Dryland turnout has been negligible as most of our team juggles fall sports, squeezing in those extracurriculars before the snow flies. However, those showing up daily are showing a solid performance as they get prepped for the season to come!

Our FIS and U16 groups recently returned from a snowy camp in El Colorado, Chile. The camp was a positive experience for all as the U16s got on snow for the first time this prep period, and the FIS groups met and came together with the staff and PG athletes on both the men's and women's sides. Only some of our FIS staff was present as Head Coach Coley Oliver and wife Megan Harrod welcomed their first child on September 8. To fill the holes, we brought in the big guns with the help of former Mens World Cup Speed Team Coach, Scotty Veenis, filing in to help the FIS Men have a great camp.

We have a busy month ahead as we gear up for our biggest fundraisers of the season with PC Fall Trail Series, JANS Winter Welcome (October 28) & our Annual Ski & Snowboard Swap (Nov 3-5). We will have positions available soon for volunteers to assist with some of these events. If you want to knock out your work deposit hours before the ski season starts, there is no better time than these events to get it done!

Big Mountain

The Big Mountain Team's water ramp sessions at the Olympic Park this summer have been fun and productive! Many freeride athletes have been able to level up their air awareness and are developing an arsenal of tricks to bring to snow this winter.

In August, we also had a very successful ski trip to Catedral Patagonia in Argentina. Our freeride athletes spent the week developing avalanche education, building backcountry features, navigating big mountain terrain, practicing Spanish, and exploring some epic terrain. We are already stoked for next year!

Cross Country

PCSS Cross Country wrapped up its summer programs in late August before switching to afternoon programs when schools were back in session. The summer went by quickly and there were many highlights.

The Comp Team finished the summer with a camp in Carbondale, CO with Team Vail. It was our first time doing a joint camp with a Colorado team and we loved working with their coach, Sophie Caldwell. Devo ended the summer with a camping trip in the Uintas where they hiked Bald Mountain.

Fall got off to a great start with an opportunity to meet and rollerski with 5x Olympic Gold Medalist Johannes Klaebo, US Olympian Kevin Bolger and Swedish Olympic medalist Maja Dahlqvist at Soldier Hollow on September 9. Klaebo is in Park City training for 4 weeks and it’s great to get confirmation from the best in the world that Utah is a great place to be a Nordic skier both because of the training opportunities and the Nordic Community. A big thank you to the Toly family for making snow cones at the event.

Congratulations to our numerous athletes who received YSA’s Circle of Excellence awards, especially Tory Hoffman who received the prestigious Breakout Performance of the Year Award.

Many of our athletes are currently competing and doing well in high school sports such as cross country running and mountain biking. A shout out Comp athlete Kyle Clarke who posted the fastest time in the Tour De Suds at 15 years old!

Fall is also our fundraising season. We hope to see you out at the PCSS Fall Trail Series that starts September 21 and is open to all ages and abilities. Anyone age 9+ can also challenge their inner Spiderman by climbing up the nets of the 120 meter ski jump on October 14. Click here to learn more and register for one or all four Fall Trail Series events.

We will also have many silent auction items available for online bidding as part of JANS Winter Welcome along with opportunity drawing tickets available at www.ysausa.org. We will also raise money through the Park City Ski Swap and Live PC Give PC in early November.

Winter registration is open and programs start in early November. Click here for more information and to register!

Devo Freestyle

Summer team training is officially over; however, athletes can still book one-off water ramp sessions through September. We had 4 athletes qualify their front or back flips on water ramps this year, so they will be cleared to train those on snow this winter!

Winter dryland training will begin at UOP and Woodward in mid-October. Registrations are coming in quickly, and the program is filling up so please click here to sign up soon. In addition to reserving a space on the team, registering now will help ensure your athlete is able to reserve the correct team jacket size while inventory is still available (jacket details and size chart can be found in registration).

Moguls

Head FIS coach, Sam Tarrant spearheaded an awesome training camp in New Zealand and the crew made it back successfully after a few delays with travel. The Remarkables is a great little resort near Queenstown with an excellent location for a mogul course.

Sincere thanks go to the U.S. Freestyle Team and its staff for allowing us to take advantage of this new opportunity. We were able to train 12 days on snow with mostly sunny and warm weather, and only a few cloudy days. The training venue was easily accessible with fast laps on a high-speed, six-person lift, and the course was a just over 200 meters long with a great middle section and jumps.

The Queenstown/Frankton area also offered plenty of activities for us after skiing each day!

Program Director, Mikaela, and the squad finished up a 15-day water ramping block. We are looking forward to this weekend when we'll reunite with the team members who were in New Zealand for our last push on the ramps. Most athletes have been honing in on competition tricks and playing with different speeds to increase their adjustability before heading to snow.

Park & Pipe

Park & Pipe is in the midst of a very busy September. We currently have 12 athletes and 4 coaches in New Zealand at a 3-week slopestyle training camp. It has been good trip so far with the crew a week in and just getting their ski legs back. We are looking forward to more updates from them as the trip progresses.

We are transitioning Ian Punnett to the Head Coach role where he will oversee the day-to-day operations of the PNP team working alongside our new Comp Team Head Coach, Teddy Goggin, to continue building strong training programs and a competition pipeline.

The airbag construction project had another setback and is unlikely to be completed in time to open this season. However, we will continue to run water ramp sessions on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through the first weekend in October (weather permitting). Register for water ramp sessions here to take advantage of the final few weeks of ramping to perfect tricks for this upcoming season.

Winter season is quickly approaching and registration is open for our winter programming. Payment plans are available, so please take advantage of our best pricing and payment plans by registering soon as our 9% "early bird" discount will decrease on September 30. IMPORTANT! If you are waiting for a scholarship to sign up, please contact Hatch or Mike Campbell to discuss options as scholarships will likely not be announced until after the best discount expires.

PNP is also running trampoline training sessions and dryland training for athletes registered for winter programming. Trampoline sessions are held at Woodward on Wednesdays from 6-8pm through November 15. Dryland will be at the UOP Thursdays from now until October 26.  Read more about and register for these training options here.

Youth Development

Registration for youth development programs is open and spots are filling up fast! Some programs have reached their capacity already, so if you are thinking of registering for this season don't wait much longer as the program you want may be full if you delay.

Youth Development is hiring coaches for our Alpine, Freestyle and Snowboard programs for this coming winter, so please let us know if you or anyone you know is interested in coaching the little groms on the weeknights! No prior coaching experience is required, but it is recommended to at least have had experience as an athlete on a ski team or prior experience working with ski school.

We also welcome “junior coaches” to help train the next generation of skiers and riders. Please let us know if you have or are a current athlete 15 years of age or older interested in coaching on a part-time basis and around their/your own training schedule.

For anyone interested in coaching for Youth Development, please contact Ryan DeVine at rdevine@parkcityss.org

Ski Jumping

PCSS Ski Jumping has had a whirlwind end to our summer. Shortly after wrapping up Springer Tournee, we took a group to Steamboat Springs for a quality week of training. In addition to jumping, a highlight of the trip was a hike to a brisk swimming hole at the Upper Fish Creek Falls!

Now in our Fall session, we have a great mix of veteran athletes and young newcomers to the sport. Our whole team is benefiting from some of our younger jumpers making the transition to the 90M ski jump, and those youngsters are certainly enjoying flying on the Olympic-sized hill! Click here to watch a 12 year old fly over 300 feet!

Last weekend, we were proud to see many of our athletes recognized at the YSA Circle of Excellence Awards. Logan Cadman and Augie Roepke received All Star Awards, and Root Roepke, Ian Carmack and Rachael Haerter were honored with the Champion Award. Our proudest moment came with Rachael also winning the Leadership Award - a prestigious recognition for the athlete within our YSA community who provides the most outstanding leadership! Rachael was unfortunately not able to accept her award in person, as she was at a training camp in Norway with USA Nordic.

Looking ahead, we’ll continue to jump on plastic through most of October. Before we know it, it will be time for jumping on snow! Click here to learn more about and register for our winter programs.

Addisyn Lundberg on her way to a Varsity podium finish

Skimo

Click here to register for our Race, Devo or Master's Skimo programs!

While our eyes are turned to the winter season, many of our athletes are tuning up their race skills in the throes of mountain bike season. Our 16-year-old athlete, Maci Zaniello, just completed the grueling 75-mile Park City Point-to-Point! Our athletes are also leading many of the overall standings in their high school mountain bike categories! After two races, Mei Li Han leads the JV B Girls, Lochlan Frick leads JV B Boys, Addisyn Lundberg stands 4th in Varsity Girls, and Izzy Crandall is on top of the Freshman Girls rankings.

We are excited to announce that we have two new coaches coming on to PCSS Skimo this winter - Mark Christopherson (Mark C) and Mark Flis (Mark F)

Mark C will be our Devo Head Coach. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Mark C has lived in Utah since 1987. He is a Production Manager at Voile Manufacturing, a UT company producing skis, split boards and backcountry equipment. In the summer, you'll find him on the trails on a bike or running. He has completed over 50 ultra marathons to date! During the winter, Mark C spends his time backcountry skiing and skimo racing and is looking forward to sharing the knowledge he has acquired over the years.

Mark F will be assisting Rob Aldrich, who is stepping up from an assistant coach to our Race Team Head Coach. Mark F is originally from outside of Philadelphia, and began the ski journey at the age of 4. The mountains drew Mark F to Western Colorado University where he earned degrees in Business Administration and Recreation Leadership while teaching mountaineering and rock climbing courses for the National Outdoor Leadership School in Lander, WY. Mark F discovered endurance sports through cycling where he spent over a decade racing bikes with a focus on cyclocross.  His passion for skiing and endurance sports led him to the world of Skimo.

While we are excited about our coaching staff, we are still looking for more female representation. Please contact Adam Loomis if you are interested or have someone you'd like to recommend.

Snowboard athletes with Strength & Conditioning coach, Will Horstmann, at the COE

Snowboard

The leaves are changing and the Snowboard Team has some exciting things happening as we get ready for the Winter 23/24 Season. Our dryland programs are up and running with offerings at Woodward Park City, the USANA Center of Excellence, and City Park. There is a little something for everyone and we are still taking registrations, so please reach out with any questions

The Global Team will be traveling to Austria for training in early October. There will be shredding galore on dry slopes to airbag at Banger Park as well as on snow on Hintertux Glacier. This really gives the athletes the best training option this time of year and we are really looking forward to the Instagram clips!

The Snowboard Team is actively selling opportunity drawing tickets for JANS Winter Welcome on October 28. If you would like a chance to win the grand prize of a trip to the Paris Olympics, please find a snowboard athlete and help our cause. We will also have plenty of snowboard gear in the silent auction portion of the evening. There are lots of ways to get involved and help out.

Winter registration is live on the website, and prices go up on October 1. We are planning another killer season, so sign up now and spread the word. We are really looking forward to seeing you ALL on the hill!

Please welcome Sam Tarrant as our new FIS Moguls Head Coach. Originally from upstate New York, he grew up skiing at Killington Mountain Resort. Sam attended high school in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and eventually went on to graduate from Southern New Hampshire University with a Global Master’s of Business Administration degree.

In his free time, Sam loves to go fly fishing with his 3-year-old yellow lab, Brookie, and enjoys the musical stylings of the one and only 50 Cent.

Sam is known for his dedication to the sport of mogul skiing, and has given much of his time to both coaching and volunteer positions within the sport over the last 15 years. We are so thankful to have him on our team!

ATHLETE Host Families Needed

Each winter highly driven athletes move away from family and friends for access to world class coaches, training, and venues here in Park City. Athlete hosting is a great opportunity to give back to the winter sports community and help these aspiring athletes along with increasing accessibility for our club. Moving to an unfamiliar city can be a challenge, and host families can help provide a sense of normalcy as these athletes acclimate to new surroundings.

We currently have 2 athletes actively searching for host families! If you are interested in being a host family, please check out the details on our Hosting Family Bulletin Board. Once you’ve reviewed the information there, feel free to contact Hatch Haslock with questions and/or to begin the process of building a lifelong relationship with a potential Olympian!
