All PCSS programs – from PC Shredders where young athletes experience a 12-week program across multiple disciplines, to FIS-aged athletes competing across the globe – require significant resources to support training, coaching, education, travel, and equipment. Financial contributions to PCSS directly support the development of future athletes in our community and their pathways to success. Your donation of any size, one-time or monthly is truly appreciated.

Message from Executive Director, Christie Hind

Late spring/early summer is always a time of celebration at PCSS! This month, National Team Nominations and High School Graduations top the list!

We are excited to share that a record four PCSS athletes have been nominated to the 2023/2024 US Freeski Rookie Team for the first time: Tanner Blakely, Ellie DeRosier, James Kanzler and Henry Townshend. They join Connor Curran who was nominated for the National Team in Freestyle Aerials last month and two mogul athletes who met National Team criteria for the first time at the end of the season: Kylie Kariotis and LuLu Shaffer.

We also extend huge congratulations to the many student athletes who graduated High School this spring.

PCSS summer programs are in full swing this week! All our divisions have summer training underway, and while we still have some snow to use, it’s nice to see athletes cross-training in a variety of activities – water ramping, swimming, rollerskiing, skateboarding, gymnastics, running and more.

Speaking of running, please join us for the Fourth of July 5k and parade. It’s such a beloved community event and has been a Park City tradition for many years. Thank you to Cole Sport and our many sponsors for helping keep the run going! Additional information about the event and the link to register for the 5k is below (note that there is a discount to register your PCSS athlete). If you’d like to participate in the parade, please contact your coach for more information.

I hope you are all taking advantage of the beautiful, cool conditions to get outside with your friends and family as much as possible. Cheers to a lovely summer season!

Division Updates

Aerials

The Aerials team is excited to announce that we are hosting several events this summer. The first is the all-new “World Flip League  which is a water ramp competition for Freestyle skiers. The top 5 finishers of each gender will advance to a championship round with a chance to train with USSS Aerials water camp World Cup athletes. World Flip League  will be held on July 12, so watch for registration and details coming soon!

We are also hosting several World Cup level water ramp competitions at the UOP. We will host an individual event on August 26 and a team event on August 27. Both will provide excellent spectating, so be sure to save the dates on your calendar!

Alpine

Alpine training camps ran at UOP through May 8th this year - an incredible feat! Many of our athletes continue to take advantage of the deep spring skiing from California to Colorado. Locally, Snowbird is still going strong and our groups continue to enjoy spring conditions getting both mileage and simple gate environments in addition to dryland training. Summer camps are also underway with U-14s at Mammoth through June 13. Regional camps at Mount Hood start next month and we hope a number of our athletes will be selected!

Big Mountain

Our Big Mountain team starts training for the Summer this week. BMT head coaches, Sawyer Stroud and Sarah Taylor, will be running our first BMT water ramp training session on Friday, June 16 from 3-6pm. If you are interested in water ramp training with your BMT coaches, click here.

BMT also has a team camping trip planned for June 26-28. More information is available here on our website, or contact Sawyer Stroud at sstroud@parkcityss.org with any questions.

Moguls

We are excited to welcome our new FIS Head Coach, Sam Tarrant, to the PCSS Mogul Team. Sam comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and over 15 years of coaching experience. We are so excited to have him as a part of our team.

The FIS team has been on-snow at Snowbird and water-ramping at the Utah Olympic Park. For our younger athletes, moguls Jump Start June camp starts next week (June 13). We will be hosting three Jump Start camps this summer, each consisting of 9 days of ramping. This is the perfect opportunity for young aspiring mogul skiers to start perfecting their aerial maneuvers. If you have any questions please reach out to mogul program director, Mikaela Wilson (mwilson@parkcityss.org).

Cross Country

Congratulations to our athletes for completing the school year, in particular our six seniors, Zac Watson, Zach Selzman, Bailey Carmack, Zoe Peterson, Calvin Crossland, and Jack Tooley.

Zac Watson will do a postgraduate year and also coach for PCSS, Zach Selzman will attend Cal Poly in the Fall, Bailey will ski for Williams College, Zoe will attend the University of Utah, Calvin will run for Washington University in St. Louis, and Jack will attend Montana State University.

Please check out our Instagram page @PCSSNordic to see profiles on our seniors and what being on the Nordic team meant for them and their next adventures!

During the month of May, our Devo and Comp athletes started practices again. The Comp Team is already off to Truckee, California for an on-snow camp with other Far West teams. In the afternoons, they have dryland practice and also spend time at Lake Tahoe.

We are excited to announce Sienna Leger Redel is now our Devo Head Coach. Sienna is a PCSS alum who has been coaching for us for five years. It is the first time we have had a full-time coach for the Devo team. Our Devo summer programs start on June 12 and there is still space to sign up for our programs that are open to athletes ages 10+ who are interested in endurance sports. We have a variety of days and weeks to choose from and practices consist of many outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, running, circuits, rollerskiing and UOP activities. Click here for more information and to sign up.

Keeping with tradition, the Nordic team plans to come out in force for the Fourth of July 5k run and parade. We hope to see you out there! Click here to sign up for the race. Athletes can use the code PCSS23 for a discount.

Coach Leah Stroud and PCSS Athletes at Project Gold Camp

Park & Pipe

It's been a big month for our PNP team! In addition to the Team Nominations announced in the ED Report above, PNP Head Coach, Leah Stroud, just returned from Project Gold where she worked with the US Ski Team and up and coming athletes. In addition, several of our athletes were invited to Project Gold Camp to be coached by US Ski Team coaches - Izzy Worthington, Kieran Gabrielson, Henry Townshend, Ellie DeRosier, Marty Kingston, James Kanzler, Jacqueline Kanzler, and Tanner Blakely.

PNP has a few on snow camps coming up. We are sending a group of 15 FIS-level athletes to Momentum for some slopestyle training, and another group of 15 athletes will be traveling to Mt. Hood for slopestyle and halfpipe training.

Summer training is underway at our various venues (UOP, Woodward, and COE). Visit our website to view all available training opportunities.

We look forward to seeing you this summer!

Ski Jumping / Nordic Combined

School's out and PCSS Ski Jumping is back on the hill!  After a good spring of dryland training, we are starting with the basics. All of our athletes enjoyed their first jumps on the small hills last week. Our littles enjoyed having their older mentors on the hill with them at the same time - with everyone from age 8 to 18 jumping together!

We are looking forward to the 24th Annual Springer Tournee July 24 - 29! We’ll see athletes from around the continent join us for the largest gathering of Ski Jumping & Nordic Combined in North America. Early in the week, athletes will be busy training, and the younger participants will enjoy mentorship from National Team athletes. Competitions run Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning, so be sure to come out and watch the action! See the full schedule on our website here.

Skimo

Now that school is out, our athletes are working even harder putting in big hours on the trail. Many of our skimo athletes are already well into bike season and off to the races! We also continue to partner with PCSS’s Nordic Comp team to provide strength training in the gym.

In addition to summer happenings, PCSS Skimo is excited about our newest program for the 2024 Winter - Master's Skimo! We will have the highly sought-after uphill route in place on West Peak this winter! Adult athletes will get to experience this new training venue and will have strength and conditioning training opportunities at US Ski & Snowboard’s Center of Excellence. Experience with skiing uphill is desired, but no backcountry or race experience required! Stay tuned for more information! Any interested adults can email our Skimo Program Director to stay in the loop.

Snowboard

The PCSS Snowboard Global Team ripped to Mammoth Mountain's High Performance Camp for our spring camp the last week of May. It was a historically large training camp with 10 riders in attendance. On hill, athletes put on an absolute progression clinic with riders landing everything from first cripplers, rodeos and 540s to first triple cork 1440s. The crew enjoyed great weather and a ton of snow! Up next for the Global Team squad is a trip to Mt. Hood during the final week of June.

Back in Park City, our new Skate Camps at Trailside Park are off to a strong start with sessions starting to hit capacity. There is room for more riders, so if you're interested in learning and improving skills, click here for more information and to sign up for one or more sessions. If you have questions, contact Sam Everett at severett@parkcityss.org.

PCSS Coaches "Level Up" USSS Certifications

We are proud to announce that a number of our coaches recently completed training to "level up" their USSS coaching certifications. Our own Ryan DeVine provided training to enable James Saarela, Nick Shearer and Sawyer Stroud to earn Level 200 certifications.

Coaches Ian Punnett, James SaarelaMike Campbell, and Sam Everett then traveled to Mammoth in California to complete Level 300 certification. Coach Keith Shipman was an instructor for this course. All are excited to use their newly acquired training!

Our Snowboard team is offering a "First Drops" skate camp in July designed for new and beginning skaters to focus on skill development in a familiar setting. Riders can show up each day knowing exactly what features are present, and so can work on perfecting the basics and building skills from one day to the next.
