Message from Executive Director, Christie Hind

The heat is on, and summer programs are in full swing. It’s been so much fun to watch our coaches and athletes find ways to continue to improve their skills off snow. They have been flying into our new and improved airbag and the refreshing water of the UOP pool, skateboarding and practicing skills on trampolines, building strength at the USSS Center of Excellence, and rollerskiing all over Park City.

We have also been busy hosting a number of fun community events, including the Fourth of July 5K Fun Run and two of the four Moose on the Loose kids trail running races. In addition, the 25th annual Springer Tournee ski jumping competition starts this week and we hope you will all join us as spectators and/or volunteers. We also hope you will join us Saturday night at 7:30 for an outdoor concert down at the Nordic Flats at UOP. Theoretical Blond is playing at the conclusion of the jumping competition. Tickets are $20 per person (kids under 12 are free). There is more information on all these events in the articles below.

I am also pleased to announce that we have promoted several team members to bigger leadership roles. Tommy Eckfeldt has accepted the position of Athletic Director of our Performance Sports divisions (Alpine, Nordic, Skimo, Strength and Conditioning), and "Hatch" Haslock has been named Athletic Director of our Action Sports divisions (Freestyle, Freeski, Snowboard and Youth Development). Jackie Wilkinson has been named Director of Operations. I am proud of our entire team, and know that these changes will help drive the club forward as we continue to provide excellent support for all our athletes and coaches.

ski jumping in july!

A Beautiful Fourth of July Fun Run and Parade!

We had another successful Fourth of July Fun Run 5k with nearly 1,000 participants of all ages and abilities. Locals and Park City visitors ran and walked the traditional 5k course through the Thaynes Canyon neighborhood near Park City Mountain. Click here for results!

The run was followed by festivities in the Cole Sport parking lot, including awards, an opportunity drawing, and pancakes supplied by Kodiak CakesMany thanks to our title sponsors Cole Sport and Industrial Supply for keeping the tradition alive since 1984 as well as our participating sponsors, Intermountain HealthSilver King CoffeeSalomon, Jim Clifford Builders, Alpine PromotionsSherman Homes, and UnTapped. We are grateful for all of the community support.

Moose on the Loose!

We have now successfully hosted half of this summer's Moose on the Loose kids trail running events! This ultra cute series of races designed especially for kids ages 3-14 has been held since 2017, but PCSS is the new organizer starting this year. Our first race was held on the trails below the Utah Olympic Park, and the second was just this past weekend starting at the North Round Valley trailhead.

There are two remaining races:

  • August 10 starting at the Quinn's Round Valley Trailhead
  • September 14 on the Upper UOP trails

Click here for more information and to register for one or both races.

We are also looking for additional volunteers, so please sign up via the "Signups" section of your PlayMetrics app, or send an email to events@parkcityss.org for assistance.

Big thanks to our sponsors, Burrus Financial Services and GBS Benefits. And thanks to Kodiak Cakes for the pancakes!

FIS Dryland has been cruising for the past month with some great sessions both in the COE and out in City Park focusing on aerobic capacity, general strength and hypertrophy. Bigger and stronger is the goal for everyone!

Our IMC U16 groups have jumped into dryland training, too. They are also working on general strength, hypertrophy and aerobic capacity, which are the best areas to focus on early in the prep period.

cross country

PCSS Cross Country has been making the most of summer in Park City by rollerskiing on local bike paths, mountain biking, peak bagging, strength training at the COE and enjoying Utah Olympic Park activities.

Some highlights include the Devo team getting a tour of the Center of Excellence and then joining the comp team afterwards for a game of soccer. We loved seeing the comp athletes including the Devo athletes and getting to know them. Devo also got to go to Soldier Hollow on the first day of summer practice to rollerski and do biathlon.

Comp team has had two out-of-town camps, a trip to Bryce in early June and Sun Valley in July. We had a number of our athletes participate in both the Moose on the Loose trail series and the Fourth of July 5k.

We have some fun activities planned for the remainder of summer and have some space in our weekly Devo camps. To learn more, please email Emma Garrard at egarrard@parkcityss.org.

Please contact Jack Boyczuk at jboyczuk@parkcityss.org if you're interested in participating in the US Ski and & Snowboard Aerials Project Gold Camp taking place August 15-18.

Freestyle moguls

Moguls has had a fantastic start to the summer, with numerous days spent on the water ramp, in the gym, and on snow. Early summer was a good time for the coaches and staff to solidify training plans and begin work on the upcoming winter schedule.

We had great training in Hintertux, Austria, in June. We had a full course with a very short lap time on a T-Bar. We utilized all of the great terrain for flats drills. We also did some local sightseeing and glacier swimming. Great work from all of the athletes during the camp!

Mark your calendars - we will be the host of the 2025 Junior National Championships, March 17-23. The Utah Olympic Park is excited to have a full year of snowmaking experience on West Peak and are preparing for all things snow. Let's start hoping for a cold December!

Ski Jumping / Nordic Combined

Our ski jumping and nordic combined athletes have been hard at work making the most of their summer “vacations.” We’ve been on the jumps here at the Olympic Park since early June, and already have our first camp and competitions of the summer under our belt.

At the end of June, we hopped over to Steamboat Springs for the annual Fourth of July camp and Jumpin’ and Jammin’ competition in the ‘Boat. After a few days of great training, we had competitions on their 8, 45 and 75 meter hills. The real action kicked off early on the morning of the Fourth, with running and rollerski sprint races on Main Street just before the start of the parade.

After the Nordic Combined racing, we were back on the jumps for an exciting Elimination Jumping competition on the 75M. Two of our athletes earned their way into the penultimate round of 8 with consistent flights to the bottom of the hill. Youngster Liam Demong wowed the crowd with a massive 80M jump. (Watch here on the fourth slide in this post). Unfortunately Liam wasn’t able to stand this ride, but it was exciting to watch!

Now our full attention is set on the 25th Annual Springer Tournee, July 16 - 20th. We’ll have athletes coming from as far away as Anchorage, Alaska and Ishpeming, Michigan for this week of community and competitions.

Don’t miss the big show on Saturday, July 20th, 5:30 - 7:30PM. The competition will feature local as well as U.S National Team athletes in a unique target distance format. Plus, enjoy a live performance from Theoretical Blonde, beer on tap from Offset Bier Co, food trucks and a live video board!

We’d love to have anyone reading this consider volunteering to help make the event a success. Sign up to volunteer here.  If you like to just come and enjoy the show, tickets are just $20 and kids 12 and under are free.

Skimo

It’s trail season for Skimo athletes! Our athletes have been hard at work (and having fun) on their bikes and in their running shoes this summer. The majority of our team focuses their summer energy on mountain biking, and thanks to Park City High School’s awesome program, are getting all the endurance training they need on the single track this summer.

Some of our athletes prefer to spend their time on foot, including Griffin Briley, who is coming off an impressive 4th place finish in the Pro Category at the Cirque Series Brighton, behind two elite Kenyan runners and one former US Ski Team nordic athlete!

Skimo isn’t only about endurance, as strength is important too! Our athletes have had the opportunity to participate in strength training throughout the summer under WIll Horstmann’s tutelage, and we will have a new fall session starting up on August 28th.

Snowboard

Summer programs have been a blast so far, and it has been great to see some athletes at the training! Even as the temps rise, we are always thinking about Snowboarding!

Skate Camp has been very fun, and there are a few spots left for July camps. Check with Rick at rshimpeno@parkcityss.org if you'd like to sign up. And, just let us know if you have a younger skater who would benefit from these local camps as we may be able to make that happen.

The airbag has made a triumphant return to the UOP! A great way to prepare for the airbag is to use the Skills portion of the Skate and Skills programming.

Youth Development/devo freestyle

UOP summer camps and team programs are in full swing and the kids have been progressing so much! If your young athlete is looking to cool off this summer and progress their jumping skills, then come on up to the UOP and join the Devo Freestyle team for some of their training sessions! You can purchase anywhere from just a single session up to 10+ sessions. These sessions are filling up fast so don't wait to sign up! For more info check out the website or email Ryan DeVine at rdevine@parkcityss.org

Winter registration is now open for all Youth Development and Freestyle All Skills (formally Devo Freestyle) programs! Spots are filling up fast so don't wait to register your young athlete before it's too late!
