JANS Winter Welcome

On Saturday, October 28, the Youth Sports Alliance (YSA) will host JANS Winter Welcome. This annual fundraising event supports youth winter sports programs in the greater Park City area, including Park City Ski & Snowboard. This year's grand prize opportunity drawing winner is headed to Paris, France for a week-long trip to the 2024 Summer Olympic Games!

You can support PCSS by purchasing opportunity drawing tickets from a current PCSS athlete. You can also buy tickets online here, but be sure to indicate the PCSS division you wish to support with your purchase!

Message from Executive Director, Christie Hind

As we welcome the crisp air and look forward to the winter season, we have been busy planning and hosting multiple important fundraising events this fall. The Trail Series wrapped up on Saturday, October 14, with the epic Ski Jump Challenge that required athletes to climb the largest ski jump at the Utah Olympic Park. It was a beautiful day, and we are grateful for all who pushed to and/or past their limits as part of this annual event.

JANS Winter Welcome is on October 28. Although the event is sold out, we encourage you to purchase opportunity drawing tickets from a PCSS athlete or online. All tickets proceeds go directly to the PCSS team you designate, and the grand prize is an amazing trip to Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics!

Our largest event of the year, the PCSS Ski Swap, will be held November 3-5. There are still many volunteer shifts available, so please sign up here if you’re able to help, and be sure to invite your friends, family members, and acquaintances in the market for ski and snowboard gear to attend!

We have also been taking advantage of the amazing weather this autumn with your athletes. The photos included in the Division Updates section below depict our team members enjoying a variety of locations and activities. Bring on the snow!

PARK City Ski & Snowboard Swap!

Our largest fundraiser of the year, the PCSS Ski Swap, is scheduled for the first weekend of November, so please encourage your friends, family, and acquaintances to attend! The Park City Ski & Snowboard Swap is a fantastic opportunity for people who want great deals on a terrific selection of new and used skis, snowboards, boots, poles, apparel and accessories.

New this year is an additional drop-off location at the Skullcandy building at 6301 N Landmark Drive in Park City. In addition, we are offering FREE ENTRY on Saturday or Sunday if you spend $50 at a participating Kimball Junction restaurant. Participating restaurants include Park City Brewing, Vessel Kitchen, Bartolo’s Park City, Hearth and Hill, Maxwell’s and Sushi Blue.

You can also get a head start on completing your 2023/2024 parent volunteer hours by helping out. There are still a variety of dates, times and positions still available. All volunteer hours will be credited toward your work deposit for the 2023/2024 season.

Please note that we are using a new system to register for volunteer positions. Click here to create an account and then view and sign up for the available spots of interest to you.

Thank you for supporting this important event!

2023 Trail Series Recap

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Fall Trail Series! We had more than 150 athletes of all ages and abilities participate in one or more races as part of the series. In the final event on October 14 - the Ski Jump Challenge - participants ran and climbed up the largest ski jump at the Utah Olympic Park. A big thanks to our sponsors Summit Sotheby's, Industrial Supply, Backcountry and Sherman Homes

Sam Collins was undefeated in winning both the Ski Jump Challenge and the overall Men's Series. For the women, Abbi Antablin won the Ski Jump Challenge, and Shaina Short won the overall Women's Series. Tatum Flach and Liam Demong won junior races in the Ski Jump Challenge, and also the overall series. Tatum was also undefeated and won all 4 series races. Winners of the series received gift cards to Black Diamond.

Division Updates

While we have been busy planning and hosting (or preparing to host) our key fundraising events for the season, our divisions have been keeping athletes busy with dryland and, in some cases, on-snow training. Updates for this month are primarily photos of what we've been doing. As always, please contact your athlete's coach and/or sport director if you have feedback or questions.

AerialS

We were thrilled to open our new mini ramp which is a true Mini coming in half the size of the Single with a much more user friendly shape. We expect this new mini to allow many more people to have a positive experience accessing the water ramps for all of our programs, especially Aerials.

Alpine

Alpine dryland is out in full force this month as all our groups started wrapping up the fall sports. We’ve had some unreal weather to pound out the agility courses, rollerblading, and plyo sessions outdoors. Everyone is getting excited now as temps start dropping and the days get shorter.

We get busy in the next couple of weeks with JANS Winter Welcome almost upon us, as well as the Annual Ski & Snowboard Swap.  We even got to reseed the UOP West Peak hills this past weekend with a great turnout of athletes and parents.

This time next month we will be skiing here at home!  Here we go!

Cross Country

Thank you everyone who has purchased JANS opportunity drawing tickets and donated auction items. One hundred percent of these proceeds go back to the Nordic team and help fund our programs.

We are excited to announce our Devo coach and parent Billy Demong has been named to the US Ski Team Hall of Fame, and Comp coach Liz Stephen won the Trail to Gold Coaching Fellowship and will coach for the US Ski Team during European World Cups in December before returning to Park City to coach the Comp team for Senior Nationals.

PCSS Nordic had 8 Comp athletes compete in rollerski races at the Schutzenski Festival at Soldier Hollow October 14 and 15. The races were highly competitive and featured the best athletes in the country. Some top performances were from Lucas Fassio who placed 3rd and Keely Fisher who placed 4th in the Skate sprint.

Our Fall dryland sessions will wrap up at the end of October with winter season starts for our Devo and Comp teams on November 6.

Devo Freestyle

It's been a great summer at the UOP, and dryland training has begun at Woodward Park City! Dryland sessions are FREE for all currently enrolled Devo Freestyle athletes and are built around developing air awareness, learning fundamental tricks for snow, and exposing athletes to the basics of conditioning as the season approaches.

Dryland sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings through November 16. To keep group size manageable, note that athletes may attend only one session per week. Registration is required for each session through both PCSS and Woodward. For more information, contact James Saarela at jsaarela@parkcityss.org

Snowboard

The Global Team is finishing up a preseason training camp in Austria. The trip has been incredibly successful with 7 days on the airbags at Banger Park, and 7 beautiful days on hill at Hintertux. Additionally this has been the largest snowboard training camp of the modern era with 12 riders accompanied by 2 coaches. Riders achieved goals, learned new skills, and are frothing for the domestic season to begin.

Back in the States, team members are participating in dryland training including working out with coach, Will Horstmann, at the US Ski & Snowboard Center of Excellence.

ATHLETE Host Families Needed

Each winter highly driven athletes move away from family and friends for access to world class coaches, training, and venues here in Park City. Athlete hosting is a great opportunity to give back to the winter sports community and help these aspiring athletes along with increasing accessibility for our club. Moving to an unfamiliar city can be a challenge, and host families can help provide a sense of normalcy as these athletes acclimate to new surroundings.

We currently have 2 athletes actively searching for host families! If you are interested in being a host family, please check out the details on our Hosting Family Bulletin Board. Once you’ve reviewed the information there, feel free to contact Hatch Haslock with questions and/or to begin the process of building a lifelong relationship with a potential Olympian!
