All PCSS programs – from PC Shredders where young athletes experience a 12-week program across multiple disciplines, to FIS-aged athletes competing across the globe – require significant resources to support training, coaching, education, travel, and equipment. Financial contributions to PCSS directly support the development of future athletes in our community and their pathways to success. Your donation of any size, one-time or monthly is truly appreciated.

PLEASE HELP MAKE A DIRECT IMPACT BY DONATING TO PARK CITY SKI & SNOWBOARD TODAY!

Message from Executive Director, Christie Hind

It appears that summer has finally arrived in Park City, and our athletes are no longer shivering after water ramping into the pool! We enjoyed a fabulous Fourth of July celebration including hosting the traditional 5k Fun Run, and then participating in the parade. We appreciate all of you who joined us for one or both events!

Coming up July 24-29, the Springer Tournee will be held at the Utah Olympic Park. On Thursday, July 27th, Versante Hearth & Bar has generously offered to sponsor PCSS with 25% of proceeds from 4 -9pm donated directly to PCSS. Please plan to have dinner at Versante that evening and spread the word to family and friends.

On the final day of the Springer Tournee, Saturday July 29th, please join us at the UOP from 8am -noon  to watch the top ski jumpers in the country participate in several competitions. We’ll also have music, a food truck, face painting and vendors at the venue!

It is often said that skiers are made in the summer, and the divisions have been keeping our athletes busy with summer dryland training. This has included many activities around Park City, as well as traveling to a variety of locations to get additional on-snow training. Updates from each division are included below.

Hope you are all enjoying a sunny, active summer with your family!

Free Admission to the Springer Tournee at the UOP on July 29

You're invited to join us at the Springer Tournee. In addition to watching the ski jumping competitions, we will have food trucks, music, and vendors at this fun event! Another Successful Fourth of July 5K Fun Run in the Books!

The annual Fourth of July Fun Run 5k was a huge success with over 800 runners of all ages and abilities. Prior to the start, long-time PCSS coach Dar Hendrickson did a tribute to Phil Thompson from Industrial Supply and the Cole family from Cole Sport thanking them for their years of support and dedication to the annual race and fundraiser. At precisely 8:00 am, locals and visitors alike ran and walked the traditional 5k course through the Thaynes Canyon neighborhood near Park City Mountain. Click here for results!

The run was followed by festivities in the Cole Sport parking lot, including awards, raffle drawing, pancakes by Kodiak Cakes and guided stretching by StretchLab. Many thanks to our title sponsors Cole Sport and Industrial Supply for keeping the tradition alive since 1984 as well as our participating sponsors, Silver King Coffee, Salomon, Jim Clifford Builders, Alpine Promotions and Sherman Homes. We are grateful for all of the community support.

And, Everyone Loves a Parade!

More than 50 athletes and coaches from different PCSS divisions helped decorate and then participated in the Fourth of July parade! Everyone was wearing their best red, white and blue PCSS apparel and had American flags to wave too!

Every year it seems like there are more and more people who attend to watch the parade so it's quite exciting for our athletes to get the recognition and cheers from the crowd! This year we added PCSS temporary tattoos which were also a big hit!

Division Updates

Aerials

On July 12, we held our first World Flip League competition, which was a successful event where freestyle skiers came together for a fun competition and BBQ!

Our first Project Gold camp was held June 27-30, and we were fortunate to have US Ski coaches working with PCSS Aerials athletes over 4 days. We saw lots of hard work from the athletes participating in this event! Our next Project Gold opportunity will be held August 1-4. And, we've got an Intro to Freestyle camp running August 17-19. Contact Jack Boyczuk at jboyczuk@parkcityss.org if you'd like to participate in either of these camps!

Alpine

No better way to stay cool in this heat than think of snow and skiing! We are gearing up for the season with Winter Registration NOW OPEN! While most of our older groups are in the gym for the next several weeks prepping to get on snow, our FIS PG Men’s group is beating the heat down in El Colorado, Chile, at the moment. This group of 18-year-olds will be training for the next two weeks in preparation for the start of the Chilean race season, hoping to score valuable points to start their comp season off with a bang. Check out all the program offerings on our website www.parkcityss.org to get all the most recent additions to our list of alpine-specific programs. Any questions on our offerings, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Big Mountain

BMT is in full swing and offering Monday water ramp training from 3-6pm at the UOP. To work on air awareness with your BMT coaches Sawyer Stroud and Sarah Taylor, register here.

Sawyer will be taking a group of 4-5 athletes to Argentina in August for an all-inclusive trip with SAAS Argentina where they will be skiing for 5 days in San Carlos de Bariloche. The crew will be spending the week in the mountains of Patagonia to train freeride and practice backcountry skills.

Big Mountain's fly fishing camp is just over a month away. It is an overnight trip scheduled for August 25-27 with our sights set on some rivers in eastern Utah. Registration is open now

Moguls

Moguls enjoyed a little time off for the Fourth of July. We had a few athletes participate in the 5k fun run and they had a blast! We are currently continuing our water ramp training to prep for our first on-snow camp of the summer in Mt. Hood the last week of July. We will be driving out with about 12 athletes to get six days of jumping and skiing.

Last week many of our athletes participated in the “World Flip League” competition at the UOP. We had athletes as young as 9 years old performing flips for this event. It was a great way to unite athletes from multiple disciplines in a fun and competitive environment.

We are looking forward to more water ramp and dryland training before heading to the Southern Hemisphere in late August for an on-snow camp in New Zealand alongside the US Ski Team.

Cross Country

Thank you to everyone who came out and ran the Fourth of July 5k Run and walked or rode on the PCSS float in the parade. It was great to have so many Nordic athletes support PCSS at these events. Two of our Comp Team athletes Trey Hudson and Lucas Fassio were 2nd and 5th overall in the race.

Our Comp and Devo teams have had a great summer of training so far doing a variety of activities under the guidance of Comp coaches Liz, Steve and Drew. They have been hitting the local bike paths on rollerskis, running, hiking or biking on the trails, and gym sessions at either the Center of Excellence or the UOP. The Comp Team has been testing their fitness with the infamous "Agony Hill" time trial, along with the PCHS running team, and running on the track. They are off to training camp with some of the other Intermountain Division teams in Driggs, Idaho the week of July 17.

Our Devo team has had a great summer doing a variety of activities led by Coach Sienna. We have had a number of athletes learn how to rollerski this summer, and they are enjoying it. The team had a great rollerski on the Provo River Parkway on July 13 and stopped off at Bridal Veil Falls to cool off. They also reached the summit of Clayton Peak on July 14 and swam in Bloods Lake afterwards. Monday, July 17 the team enjoyed paddleboarding on Jordanelle after a hike.

Both our Fall and Winter registrations are now open online with Fall practices starting August 22. Registration can be found at parkcityss.org.

Park & Pipe

PNP’s summer is ramping up! Our athletes are getting back into the swing of things at the ramps after a couple of successful on-snow camps in Whistler, Canada and Mt. Hood, Oregon. We are ramping 3 days per week with some inline and strength training on the other days. If you would like to get some training in this off season take a look at PNP’s offerings at our website here and get registered!

With the airbag not likely returning until the Fall, the Competition team is planning a trip to Maximize Airbag in Canada in August for the athletes to prepare for the New Zealand training camp this coming September.

Finally, PNP is in the process of replacing our head coach. Former head coach, Leah Stroud, accepted a job with the U.S. Ski Team to become the Rookie Team Head Coach. We are sad to see her go but so grateful for all she did for our PNP athletes and wish her the best in her new adventure. If you haven’t already done, be sure to congratulate her. We have posted the job and will be interviewing potential candidates shortly. In the meantime, we are naming Mike Campbell, the current Freeski Associate Director, as the Interim Head Coach to help work through the transition.

Skimo

It might be mid-summer, but from where we sit, the Skimo season is right around the corner! At PCSS Skimo, we’re looking forward to another exceptional winter! We anticipate more terrain opening at the UOP as part of the West Peak Expansion. This expansion will give our athletes an amazing opportunity to ski on new, bigger and more fun terrain!

As our team continues to grow, we are looking to add to our coaching roster. Candidates must have experience ski touring; skimo racing experience is a bonus but not required. Our practices run Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout the winter, and we also attend a few weekend races. If you’re interested in joining our team, please reach out to our Sport Director Adam Loomis.

Ski Jumping / Nordic Combined

July is a busy month for PCSS Ski Jumping & Nordic Combined! We kicked off the month in Steamboat Springs with the annual Fourth of July Ski Jumping Extravaganza. This fun week of activities included everything from training and competitions to body surfing in the Yampa river, a “barbershop” in the team house and cooking out with the Steamboat families.

While the emphasis of this event is on fun and training, we also competed in a variety of events. Early in the trip, our Nordic Combined athletes endured the grueling “Fish Creek Rollerski Time Trial” - an annual test race dating back to the mid-2000’s.  After a few more days of training, we had ski jumping competitions on the HS8, HS45 and HS75M hills. This set up the Nordic Combined racing on the morning of the Fourth. Keeping with tradition, the athletes kicked off Steamboat’s Independence Day celebrations with sprint racing on Main Street immediately before the town parade. Lastly, we competed in the Elimination Jump event, which features an opportunity for up-and-comers to compete against the National Team members. Our alum Josie Johnson took home a big purse for 2nd Overall and Top Female!

Now our sights are set on the 24th Annual Springer Tournee here at the UOP. Competitions run July 27-29. View the comp schedule here. Saturday will be the big day with fun large hill competitions and vendors from 8AM - 12PM - come out and watch! Or, if you want a front row seat to the action, sign up to volunteer here. This is our first club-wide opportunity to earn volunteer hours towards your winter 2024 work deposit!

Snowboard

The PCSS Snowboard Team has been enjoying some summer this month. It’s nice to get some family time and warmer temperatures. The staff has been buttoning up the winter web site and it will be live soon.

‘Pops’ has been out at Mt. Hood, Oregon for a couple of on-snow training camps and mentioned that the riding was ‘all time’. Please keep these camp opportunities in mind for future summers, as they are a great way to improve riding in a short/condensed session. The jumps, rails, and halfpipe are great in the summer months, especially after the winter of 22/23.

Skate Camp is rolling along here in Park City. We have several weeks remaining and this is another great way to log some hours on a board in the summertime. Coach Chris Lee is guiding the athletes through maneuvers at a variety of skateparks in Utah. Please click here for details on the skate camps, and/or contact Sam Everett at severett@parkcityss.org any questions as there are still openings, and they are valuable for all levels of skater. In addition, there are prizes so please spread the word!

Youth Development

Summer training is in full swing and the athletes have been putting in work to qualify their flips! Athletes must first qualify their flips on the ramps before they can take it to snow, so if your young athlete wants to flip on snow they first have to come put in the work on the ramps! We still have spots available in our week-long water ramp camps and daily team drop-ins so it's not too late to sign up! Even if your athlete has no interest in flipping, the ramps are still a good place to work on air awareness and to cool off in the summer heat. Not to mention it's super fun! Head to our website and click “Devo Freestyle” or “Youth Development” under the summer tab to register.
