Mandatory Health Screenings

To help ensure the health and safety of our team members, we are requiring all athletes aged 12 and up to complete a mandatory health check-up comprised of assessing medical and mental health, as well as completing baseline brain health screen.

Links to the mandatory health screening form will be emailed to all registered athletes age 12+ in the next week or so. Forms will need to be completed and returned to PCSS no later than December 15, 2022. The form provides no confidential information but must be signed by the health care provider, a parent/guardian (if the athlete is under age 18), and the athlete acknowledging completion of the screenings.

If an athlete has completed a screening within the past year, the health care provider(s) signature can be from that visit; otherwise, a new screening must be completed. In conjunction with physicians from the Kutcher Clinic, the Gallagher Clinic, and Intermountain Healthcare, we are pleased to offer several opportunities to confidentially complete this process at the UOP, as follows:

  • Tuesday, Nov 15, 5:30-7:30pm
  • Monday, Nov 28, 5:30-7:30pm
  • Saturday, Dec 3, 10:00am-1:00pm

Specific time slots will be announced soon, and you will be able to register for the following options:

  • $40 – Medical/Mental Health Screening
  • $40 – Baseline Brain Function Testing
  • $80 – Medical/Mental Health Screening AND Baseline Brain Function Testing

If you need financial assistance to cover these costs, please contact Christie Hind.

ATHLETE Host Families Needed

Each winter highly driven athletes move away from family and friends for access to world class coaches, training, and venues here in Park City. Athlete hosting is a great opportunity to give back to the winter sports community and help these aspiring athletes along with increasing accessibility for our club. Moving to an unfamiliar city can be a challenge, and host families can help provide a sense of normalcy as these athletes acclimate to new surroundings.

If you are interested in being a host family, please check out the details on our Hosting Family Bulletin Board. Once you’ve reviewed the information there, feel free to contact Hatch Haslock with questions and/or to begin the process of building a lifelong relationship with a potential Olympian!

Division Updates

Aerials

Aerials has had a wonderful September with pleasant temperatures for training at the water ramps. We wrapped up the month with an amazing competition simulation with the US and Canadian Teams. The FIS Race Director was on site testing new systems for remote judging too. Our athletes performed their winter-ready competition jumps very well and we are proud of all of their progress this year. We return to the ramps Monday for the final three weeks of training to fine tune everything for snow.

alpine

We have kicked into high gear here at Alpine since our last update. All groups are now participating in a combination of dryland training along with other fall sports. The recent Equipment Night was a fun event for all, and we were excited to have several new vendors there offering great products. Parent meetings are underway for most of our groups where we are showcasing the year ahead. And, the FIS teams just returned from their most recent successful camp in El Colorado, Chile.

Fundraising season is also well underway with Ski Swap planning and JANS Winter Welcome later in October. We are also happy to report that we have completed our staffing with some great new additions as well as your favorite veterans, and all are excited for this coming season! Now all we need is some snow!

Cross Country

The Cross Country team was excited to have a number of athletes receive Youth Sports Alliance (YSA) Circle of Excellence Awards. Jack Tooley, who has been Nordic skiing since he started in the Get Out and Play program, received the Sam Jackenthal Showstopper Award and alumni Rosie Brennan was inducted into the YSA Hall of Fame.

In addition, the following athletes received All Star Awards for outstanding achievements in local or regional competitions: Emily Campbell, Drew Crouch, Jaydon Crouch, Lucas Fassio, Keely Fisher, Tory Hoffman, John Olson, and Zach Selzman.

Athletes who received the Champion Award for achievements in national or international competitions were: Sidney Bennion, Wes Campbell, Bailey Carmack, and Elena Grissom.

We have transitioned into fall programming and athletes are working on balancing their Nordic training with academics, and often high school sports as well. Our practices are now becoming more specific for winter, and you likely have seen many of our athletes rollerskiing around Park City.

This fall it has been great to see Olympic gold medalist Johannes Klaebo in Park City for a training camp. He was gracious enough to host a 3-hour "meet & greet" and rollerski session at Soldier Hollow for local youth. He was truly impressed by the numbers of kids in Utah who are excited about Nordic skiing.

We had a great turnout for our first two Fall Trail Series events, and hope that you participate in our two remaining events. If you've not already done so (or know others who may want to participate), you can still register for any of the remaining two Fall Trail Series events here

Pricing for our winter programs goes up on October 1st so if you have not signed up yet, please register as soon as possible for winter programming here.

Moguls

The Mogul team recently returned from an on-snow camp in Australia where the athletes also competed in Australian National Championships, a FIS event. Kylie Kariotis led the results for PCSS by placing 4th in the first event, just behind World Cup and Olympic athletes. Many athletes competed new tricks, and overall it was a very productive camp.

We are finishing our water ramp season over the next few weeks while we await snow and winter! Our next big trip is to Idre Fjäll, Sweden in November for another training camp and FIS competition.

Shout out to Will Horstmann for leading some awesome dryland sessions for the athletes. We appreciate all your efforts and are thankful for your guidance. Working out in the U.S. Ski Team’s Center of Excellence has been a treat and we are thankful to have access to to this high-end facility.

Congratulations to Alli Macuga, Sami Worthington, and Jackson Crockett for receiving Champion Awards through YSA, Slader Rodman for the All Star Award, and LuLu Shaffer for being a Leadership Award nominee. We are proud of you!

Park & Pipe / Big Mountain

PNP and BMT have fully transitioned to fall scheduling. We are still offering water ramp sessions on Fridays (1:00-4:00pm), as well as on Saturdays and Sundays (10:00am-1:00pm) until October 9th. In addition, we are offering Woodward trampoline training on Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00pm, as well as dryland training on Thursdays from 5:00-6:30pm at the UOP for those who are signed up for winter programming.

If you are not yet registered for winter programming, please note that prices will increase at midnight on September 30th.  If you have any questions, please reach out to your head coach or program director. Contact and other information for our winter programming is available here.

Finally, PNP just had a crew in New Zealand at an on-snow training camp. The camp was an amazing success and athletes had a blast both skiing and exploring the beautiful country.

Ski Jumping / Nordic Combined

As the seasons change, our Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined athletes have been taking advantage of training opportunities both indoors and outdoors. Our team is hitting the gym twice a week and couldn’t be happier for the opportunity to utilize the amazing facilities at the Center of Excellence. PCSS’s strength and conditioning coach Will Horstmann is working closely with our program director Adam Loomis to create effective, challenging and fun programs for the athletes in the gym.

Outside, our athletes will continue to jump at the UOP through the month of October. We jump Mon/Wed/Fri evenings and Saturday mornings and encourage anyone interested to come watch our athletes in person!

Our Nordic Combined athletes have also been putting in the hours on the trails, bike paths and roads to get primed for the season. Earlier this month, a group of our athletes hiked and ran from Park City Mountain to Brighton which is a 10-mile traverse that includes four notable peaks - Jupiter, Guardsman, 10420 and Clayton!

We were proud to recognize some of our athletes at the 2022 YSA Circle of Excellence awards. Root Roepke and Macey Olden earned All-Star Awards, Josie Johnson (now on the National Team) earned a Champion Award, and Macey was also recognized for her years of contribution to the team with a Leadership Award nomination.

Skimo

Ski Mountaineering is ramping up as the winter approaches! Our athletes are training in the Center of Excellence as part of our first year of Skimo Strength & Conditioning training. These athletes are also participating in mountain biking and trail running races around the region.

In high school Mountain Biking, three of our athletes led the region’s points rankings! After two of four races, Tanner Antinori leads the Freshman A boys rankings, Addisyn Lundberg leads the JV A girls, and Joshua Itoi leads the Freshman B boys.

Our athletes were honored as part of the 2022 YSA Circle of Excellence with Emmett Itoi receiving an All-Star Award, while Griffin Briley, Owen Crandall, Sam Kirschner, Wesley Perkins, and Ethan Romer each received a Champion Award for national achievements. Griffin was also one of two final nominees for the Showstopper of the Year Award for his breakout victories at the 2022 ISMF Youth European Championships.

Snowboard

The seasons are changing and we couldn’t be more stoked! The cooler mornings are making it easy to get our heads wrapped around the upcoming winter.

Pops and the PCSS Snowboarding Global Team are preparing to leave for a three-week training trip in Austria. Riders will be working off hill at the Banger Park airbag facility, and on hill at Betterpark Hintertux which is part of the Hintertux Glacier. The crew is beyond excited to get some on-snow time ahead of our domestic season and learn some new tricks! This is a great opportunity for the crew and will give them a boost entering the 22/23 winter contest season.

The dryland crew is working hard to prepare for winter as they train on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Sam is leading some great trampoline and parkboard sessions at Woodward, and Wednesday is field training at City Park. Sam sees lots of smiles in these sessions and the crew is amped for the snow to fall!

Youth Development

Registration is now open for the Youth Development program for winter 2022/23! This program is focused on athletes from 7-9 years old who want a multi-sport approach to training with the opportunity to sample different disciplines. Youth Development will be spearheaded by our Shredders program, which is a 12-week program where athletes spend 3 weeks sampling each of the ski disciplines offered by PCSS (i.e., Alpine, Ski Jumping, Cross Country and Freestyle/Freeride). Athletes can also elect to participate in 12 weeks of Snowboarding in addition to the ski days, or do Snowboarding as a standalone program. If you have questions, please contact Ryan DeVine at rdevine@parkcityss.org or call (435) 649-8749, ext. 3.

Parent coaches needed! We need qualified parents to help coach some of our new Youth Development programs. Past ski program experience as an athlete and/or coach is recommended but not required, but you must be an expert skier who is able to ski anything on the mountain. Commitments range from one weekend day per week to just being "on call." These are paid positions and parents who commit to one or more days per week for the season will receive PCSS program discounts for their children. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Ryan DeVine at rdevine@parkcityss.org.
