Our Park City Citizen of the Year, Dar Hendrickson

We are thrilled to announce that the Park City Rotary Club recently named our very own Duane “Dar” Hendrickson as this year’s recipient of the Linda Singer Berrett Professional Citizen of the Year Award. In a speech recognizing his accomplishments, Park City Rotary Club member, Bob Richer, said “Today we…pay tribute to some great citizens of our community, past and present, and induct some new members into what is in effect our hall of fame. If you examine the names on the plaques, it truly is a who’s who of the last 42 years of Park City and Summit County history; the people who helped fashion the community into what it is today.”

Dar has coached with the PCSS Alpine division for 36 years, and some of his notable former athletes are Ted Ligety, Bryon Friedman, TJ Lanning, Adam Cole and Megan McJames. However, beyond these names, what attracts ski racers to his program are the life skills he teaches. Dar takes the core values of the team very seriously and instills passion, respect, accountability, integrity, and teamwork in each athlete. The culture Dar has developed over the years has played a monumental role in developing lifelong stewards of skiing and generally great people. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to be able to call Dar a part of the PCSS team.

Division Updates

Aerials

We held a multi-day recruitment camp on August 5-7, and 10 athletes participated in fun activities such trampoline training and water ramp sessions. In addition, all athletes received swag bags and two actually won U.S. Ski Team jackets.

The FIS UOP Water Ramp Competition was held on August 27 with athletes from four different countries participating in the competition.

Alpine

With school things on the minds of many, our Alpine team is gearing up to finish the summer on a high note. Our U16 and FIS groups have been enjoying the US Ski & Snowboard Center of Excellence (COE) conditioning sessions. In case you haven’t heard, we recently closed our old gym space and transitioned to the COE at the beginning of August.  Athletes participating in summer conditioning have commented on how cool it is to be working out next to Olympians in the same space. Our U12 Coach and Head Strength Coach, Will Horstmann, has done a fantastic job scheduling all our groups to get the opportunity to utilize the space.

With European glaciers looking bleak, our FIS Coaches made the right decision this summer to head to Chile. Decent snowfall and cold temps have led to solid conditions in the Región Metropolitana de Santiago. Our new PG-FIS athletes head out on August 19, with the remaining FIS Group departing on August 25. Keep an eye on our Instagram feed (@pcalpineteam) for updates from camp.

Many groups kick off the start of fall dryland training on September 6. Please reach out if you have any questions about the start of our programs. As a reminder, athletes must be registered with both USSA and PCSS before starting the dryland season.

Big Mountain

The Big Mountain program is happy to welcome Sawyer Stroud as our new Head Coach. Sawyer is the former Head Coach for the PCSS Hybrid Freeski Program, and is an avid Big Mountain and Backcountry skier who has spent the last decade calling the Wasatch home.

BMT has been having a blast on the water ramps with some of our Big Mountain Team athletes. Lots of progress is being made and more fun sessions are still to come, so with almost two more months left of Water Ramp programming, sign up here!

Registration is also now open for the Big Mountain 2022/23 winter season, and we can’t wait to get back to work with the athletes. Be sure to complete registration no later than September 30 in order to take advantage of the early bird savings! AND, note that athletes registered for the winter season may also attend our 1-day-per-week dryland training throughout the Fall, as follows:

  • Dates:  Thursdays from September 8 through October 27; no dryland October 13
  • Time:  5:00 - 6:30PM
  • Fees:  Included as part of 2022/23 winter programming registration

Cross Country

PCSS Nordic wrapped up its summer programs before school started in August. It has been an awesome summer with so many highlights. The Comp Team travelled to Bozeman for a joint camp with the Jackson team where they climbed mountains, rollerskied, played cards, cooled off in the lake and bonded with teammates and competitors. They wrapped up the week with a rollerski and running race hosted by Bridger Ski Foundation.

The Devo team wrapped up the summer by hiking Bald Mountain in the Uintas, followed by some quality lake time. They also did a number of signature bike rides starting at Empire Pass and ending at Park City Mountain Resort making the most of the amazing trails and wildflowers Park City has to offer. They also made good use of the ropes courses at Utah Olympic Park.

Our fall afternoon programs for Comp and Devo began on August 22. For more information go to parkcityss.org. We have a number of fundraisers coming up including our annual Park City Fall Trail Series starting on September 22. Be sure to sign up before September 1 for early bird pricing!

Devo Freestyle

Devo Freestyle just wrapped up the last team water ramp sessions for the summer. We had a lot more athletes this year than in the recent past, and it's great to see these younger skiers get excited about summer training! A few athletes even qualified backflips or frontflips that they can bring to snow this winter. Even those who didn't qualify left with some new tricks on the tramps and ramps, whether it was their first 180, first front or backflip, or an unnatural misty 7.

The next bit of team training will be Fall Dryland, which will run at the UOP and Woodward (date range TBD). These sessions will involve a moderate workout and trampoline time to develop and hone air awareness. All Devo and Devo Comp athletes registered for the 2022-23 winter season are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Moguls

Public school has started back up which means our Jump Start ramp team is winding down. This small but mighty group of athletes trained hard this summer, honing in new and exciting tricks on the water ramp. We are excited to see these tricks in action this winter!

Our FIS Elite and Full Time teams recently landed in Jindabyne, Australia where they plan to complete 12 days of skiing at Perisher Mountain including two days of FIS-level competition for Australian Nationals. Our athletes will be training and competing alongside 2022 Olympic gold medalist, Jakara Anthony and 2018 silver medalist Matt Graham. Best of luck!

Don’t forget to register for winter programming ASAP to take advantage of the payment plan. Please reach out to Mogul Program Director, Mikaela Wilson at mwilson@parkcityss.org with any questions!

Park & Pipe

Water ramping is in full force as we approach our last couple months of training. If you'd like to  take advantage of this amazing training tool, sign up here!

Part of our team is headed to Air Bag Maximise in Montreal in order to prepare for the Comp Team's trip to New Zealand trip at the beginning of September.

Finally, Fall Dryland is fast approaching and with our shift to training at the COE, we are hoping for high attendance and productive training sessions. Registration and information is  available here! You can choose Dryland Only in the registration or you can add it while registering for the winter program.

Ski Jumping/ Nordic Combined

Our Ski Jumping & Nordic Combined program has had a busy few weeks!  We hosted the 22nd Annual Jindro Mayer Springer Tournee at the end of July.  Nearly 100 athletes of all ages from around the country gathered for this action-packed week of practice, mentorship, competition and community.  We’d like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who made it happen, especially our own club parents - who we absolutely couldn’t do it without.

We wrapped our Summer Session with a week of Junior Jumper Camp.  Our club athletes joined in with newcomers to the sport for another fun week.  Activities included skills and training on the ski jumps, airbag jumping and ropes courses at the UOP, and an ice skating trip to the Utah Olympic Oval. It was a memorable experience for all and an introduction for some future members of our club.

Our small hill athletes will take a short break as school starts, and then we’ll jump right into our Fall Session (Aug 22 - Oct 28).  Our fundamentals program will include a skills, games and dryland day on Mondays and jumping on the small hills on Wednesday and Friday evenings. As always, we offer daily and weekly drop-ins in addition to our full programming.  Learn more about our fall programs here.

Skimo

After a busy summer on the trails, PCSS Skimo athletes can feel the seasons changing and the approaching winter. Our team has been proving their fitness all summer long with race results including strong finishes and podiums in  ICUP (mountain biking) and Cirque Series (mountain running) races. This fall, many of athletes will be racing for Park City High School on the mountain bike and cross country circuits.

In addition to cross training on the trails, our team is starting a Strength & Conditioning program throughout September and October.  We’re excited to have our athletes work with Head Strength Coach, Will Horstmann, and eager to see the fitness gains they make leading into winter.

Many Skimo athletes will be racing in the Park City Fall Trail Series at the UOP. This 4-race series begins on September 22 and is followed by two more Thursday evening races on September 29 and October 6. The final race will be the Ski Jump Challenge on Saturday, October 22.  Come see how you stack up (or just complete the courses for fun)!  Registration and more information here.

Snowboard

The Snowboard crew finished a very successful summer of skateboard camp, and we thank all the participants. "Pops" and Sam had a blast working with the athletes on skateboarding skills as well as trampoline and parkboards at WoodWard Park City. These activities proved to be a great way to jump start winter training and keep the skills moving forward!

The PCSS website is live and ready for winter sign ups here.

You will notice some changes to the programming, which are designed to make the programs more memorable and also make it easier to find the right program for athletes. The changes are primarily just to the program names, and the time commitment (i.e., number of training days) is the same. Sign up now to make the most of the payment plan!

There are a number of exciting events coming up this fall with "Equipment/Gear Night," JANS Winter Welcome, and the Ski Swap just around the corner as noted at the top of this newsletter. These are big events for PCSS so please mark your calendar and reach out to learn how you can  best help out.

Youth Development

PCSS is excited to announce our new youth development division for winter 2022/23! Youth Development will focus on athletes from 7-9 years old who want a multi-sport approach to training with the opportunity to sample different disciplines. Youth Development will be spearheaded by our Shredders program, which is a 12-week program where athletes spend 3 weeks sampling each of the ski disciplines offered by PCSS (i.e., Alpine, Ski Jumping, Cross Country and Freestyle/Freeride). Athletes can also elect to participate in 12 weeks of Snowboarding in addition to the ski days, or do Snowboarding as a standalone program.

New this year for the Shredders program is the option to add on a weekend day at Park City Mountain (PCM) to work toward the “ski mileage” needed to improve overall skiing skills. These sessions will be from 9:00AM - 1:00PM on the PCM side and will focus on general skiing skills while exploring the whole mountain. More program options will be available, and additional information will be available soon. If you have questions, please contact Ryan DeVine at rdevine@parkcityss.org or call (435) 649-8749, ext. 3.

Parent coaches needed! We need qualified parents to help coach some of our new Youth Development programs. Past ski program experience as an athlete and/or coach is recommended but not required, but you must be an expert skier who is able to ski anything on the mountain. Commitments range from one weekend day per week to just being "on call." These are paid positions and parents who commit to one or more days per week for the season will receive PCSS program discounts for their children. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Ryan DeVine at rdevine@parkcityss.org.
