Message from the Executive Director

Happy Summer to PCSS athletes and families. It is wonderful to see so many of you engaged in PCSS summer programming including hiking, biking, camping, water ramping, trampolining, and participating in dryland. Many athletes are also skiing and riding with PCSS this summer! We have teams headed to Mt. Hood in Oregon, Canada, France, Chile, Australia, and New Zealand to catch the snow and hone fundamental skills before fall pre-season camps

While coaches and athletes work hard in the field, our sport directors and admin team are hard at work planning for next season. Winter registration opens next month, and we are excited to bring new offerings and program enhancements to our membership. Venue upgrades for 2022-2023 include expanded training for older alpine athletes at Deer Valley. We are also excited for the First Phase of the West Peak to open at the Utah Olympic Park which will include a new alpine GS trail and a fully homologated mogul course. As stakeholders in this project, PCSS is among three resident clubs who enjoy exclusive early season access training. Also new next season, older athletes club-wide will have limited access to US Ski & Snowboard’s Center of Excellence for strength and conditioning training.

As a community-based program we work hard to keep program fees low. But with inflation at recent highs in Utah and payroll costs and program expenses rising, we are forecasting tuition increases club-wide. To help families balance sport and finances, PCSS will be launching a new section in our newsletter with information on access to financial resources, including scholarships. A partial list of scholarships is available here https://www.parkcityss.org/page/show/6644260-2022-23-athlete-scholarships

Finally, one of the best ways to help keep program costs down is to participate in club fundraising including by joining us in the upcoming 4th of July Fun Run. PCSS appreciates your support, and we hope you will come out and run, fundraise, and celebrate PCSS and our efforts to keep local kids skiing and riding!

Division Updates

Aerials

The Aerials team is making a splash at the Utah Olympic Park’s Spence Eccles Freestyle Pool. It doesn’t get any better than training 5 days a week at the pool on the single and double ramps catching some summer sun. The Ukrainian national team has arrived at the UOP, and PCSS is happily training alongside these amazing athletes.
PCSS Aerials has been given the opportunity to use the “Super Trampoline” at the US Ski Team’s Center of Excellence. At this facility, we use the bungee system to accelerate the time it takes to learn new tricks in the fastest and safest way possible. We also get to throw big tricks into the foam pit. Freestyle Aerials is the foundation for any flipping sport including Moguls, Freeski, and Pipe. Come learn the fundamentals of Aerials and enhance your skiing. For a list of aerial programs, visit our website.

Alpine

Summer 2022 is in full swing with our first on-snow FIS age camps just wrapping up in Copper Mtn.  The high elevation and small group size made for an extremely productive camp with hard snow and lots of laps. Our U16 and U14 groups will be skiing next. They will be heading out to Europe's largest glacier, Les Deux Alpes, France at the end of the month. We also have PCSS mountain biking sessions running currently, which have shown great attendance.  Several of our athletes have been invited to Western Region Camps in Mt Hood next month.  The National Development Group projects in New Zealand are coming up as well for some of our athletes.

Devo Freestyle

Devo Freestyle summer training is now in full swing! We just wrapped up the second week of our season-long water ramp training and just had our first week of water ramp camps. Availability for the rest of the summer is limited, so don't wait any longer to register your athlete! We also offer public water ramp sessions 7 days a week, including for parents who would like to give water ramping a try! To learn more information and to view program options just head to our website and click on "UOP public programs".

Devo Freestyle is excited to announce that James Saarela has been promoted to head development coach! James is a Park City local who grew up skiing/ competing with Axis Freeride and has been coaching for the development team in various roles for the last 6 years. We look forward to seeing the direction James takes the development team under his leadership.

PCSS is excited to announce our new "youth development" division. Youth Development will be a club-wide, all-encompassing development team for 7-9 year-olds that will focus on skill development and fun. Think of youth development as a "pre-devo" program that will build the necessary skills so athletes have to tools and ski skills required of our various development programs. More information with specific program options to come in the next few months. If you have any questions about this new division or would like to learn more please email Ryan DeVine at rdevine@parkcityss.org

Freeski

Summer is in full swing for Freeski. Coaches and athletes are training on water ramps, in-line rollerblading, mountain biking, and skiing on snow. While many of our athletes are training locally, some are in Canada training on big jumps and learning new tricks. There are 3 coaches and 14 athletes at our Momentum slopestyle camp hitting big jumps with an airbag landing.

The water ramps are busy and a great place to work on some new tricks and perfect old ones. Our two different in-line programs have been having a blast: Levi Michealis of the inverted program threw his first double backflip into the foam pit at Woodward and Danny, in our base program, took his blades to the Park City Skatepark for the first time.

Since we live in a world-class mountain biking destination, many of our athletes are optimizing their summer training with our mountain bike summer program. Athletes are working on bike-body separation, cornering, and navigating a variety of terrain including the downhill trails at Woodward.

Don’t forget Woodward Wednesdays! This is where your athlete can try anything they want, trampoline training, mountain biking outside, in-line skating, and parkour. We offer something fun for everyone.

Moguls

We have kicked off summer training with dryland and water ramp training at the Utah Olympic Park. The mogul team has implemented some new “Jump Start” programming aimed toward 10 to 13-year-olds looking to increase their acrobatic skills and start making a mark in the competitive mogul scene.

After a couple of weeks of jump training, the FIS Elite and Full-Time mogul teams are currently training on snow in Whistler, Canada through June 21. The glacier has been closed for the last couple of years, but we are excited to be back with record snow levels. We will continue to train on the water ramps for all of July before heading to Australia in August for some more training and a FIS competition.

Cross Country

Summer programs are underway for our Devo and Comp programs. The Comp team started summer with a camp in Bryce Canyon and enjoyed rollerskiing, biking, and running amongst the hoodoos. Summer is where the hard work, fun, and magic happens for nordic skiers.

Billy Demong, Olympic Gold Medalist in Nordic Combined, is now our lead Cross Country Development coach. Our Devo program offers a variety of outdoor activities in a team environment including biking, hiking, running, games, rollerskiing, ropes courses, swimming and camping.

Any youth between the ages of 10-14 who want to be active with their peers can join PCSS Nordic summer training. We have had alpine skiers, snowboarders, figure skaters, soccer players, participate in our summer programs. Some of our top skiers have joined in the summer and then stayed for the winter. Check out more on our programs at www.parkcityss.org or email Program Director egarrard@parkcityss.org.

Ski Jumping

We kicked off our summer jumping season with a weeklong Ski Jumping and Beyond Camp. This was our first all-day camp offering in a few years, and it was a huge success. The athletes had ample opportunity to jump throughout the week. The athletes honed their skills, while others learned how to ski jump for the first time. Each day included additional activities off the hill as a fun way to improve the campers’ overall athleticism.  Monday featured water ramping in the freestyle pool and on Day 2 we spent the afternoon at Black Diamond Gymnastics center.  The kids worked through the UOP Summit High ropes course and jumped off the high platforms to the airbags on Wednesday morning. After the last jump session Thursday morning, we wrapped the camp up that afternoon with a visit to the ice rinks at the Utah Olympic Oval.

After the success of the Jumping & Beyond Camp, we headed into regular weekly programming.  In August, we’ll have another opportunity for a camp open to all with the Junior Jumper Camp.  See our website for more details and registration.

Snowboard

Summer programming is full steam ahead with one of the largest opening sessions we’ve had!  Our Skate Camp and Combo Camp, which include trampoline and parkboard training at Woodward Park City, keeps participants moving all day long. The camps blend movements and skills that easily translate to snowboarding.

With just a few weeks of our programming underway, we are already starting to feel that heat and are already looking forward to cooler temperatures and getting back to “business.” In the meantime, we are preparing for a trip to Woodward Copper for a week of shredding in the Colorado Rockies.

Summer camp spots are still available for later sessions where we will take our skate camp on tour to visit local parks beyond the Park City limits. Kids are pushing themselves, learning new tricks, and having a good time.  Sign up while spots are still open!
